I've always had misgivings about our public education system; how it's organized and run. But I know that I want her to be part of a classroom, and we live in a great school district. Am I feeling a tiny part of how it feels to watch a child go off to college? Is it that kind of sadness? Or is it because there's something wrong with entrusting your beautiful child to a stranger who gets their marching orders from government, unions, and lobbyists?
I don't know. I hope I figure it out soon.

It's both...but if you get a fantastic teacher who genuinely loves teaching and loves your child, it all works out; I think the best thing is to get a good feel for the school, the teacher, and the classmates. I volunteered monthly (I paid a babysitter) so I could go in and get a feel for everyone. I'm very glad I did; I probably would've volunteered more frequently had it not required a paid babysitter to do so. Kennedy had a wonderful Kindergarten teacher and I am so thankful she did!
I loved volunteering at Jack's school. I was able to go almost every week. It really helps to know their teacher and have the teacher know you, not just a name. I'm also glad I got to work with the kids in his class. It helped me to see what he excelled in and what we needed to work on. Also, I'd know who to bump off if they made my baby cry. I'm kidding...sort of. By the way, Jack started 1st grade last week. Sigh.
Janae, I laughed so hard at your comment! Elke, I just love you to pieces and know exactly how you feel! It is such a big step, even for half-day kindergarten. I think part of that is because it's kind of like the first day of the next 13 years of their life... and then it's college. It just all wooshes past you from this point on - so so fast! I'm not trying to scare you! There is still plenty to experience and be a part of and she'll still be your little girl for a very long time. But they do grow up just a little bit faster after this. Be prepared for that. It still makes me weepy sometimes!
Just remember that the school and all its employees are there at your expense. That being said, keeping your ear to the ground as far as what is being taught (and how) as well as really knowing your kiddos' teachers does go a long way. Unfortunately, this is all second-hand info; we have 9 days until true initiation. I'm apprehensive too...
